Changing Receptacle Symbol

Alright. So changing the receptacle symbol is pretty simple. We're gonna go into edit family, and we are going to go to the floor plan reference level. And from here, you can see that there's two parts to this family. There's the three d element down here, which shows up like actual inside like, this is what it looks like in the model.

But that's not what shows up on the floor plan. The floor plan always just shows this symbol up here. So this is like a nested family where we drew the symbol within its own family and then dropped it inside of this family. And the reason being is that this actually is a lot of different pieces, so we didn't want it to clutter up this whole family. So instead, we made it its own family and then brought it in here.

So what you're gonna do is you actually wanna edit this symbol. The the box itself, generally, you don't need to edit it, but if you really wanna change the extrusion and go ahead and, you know, adjust the box size and everything, by all means, you can click it. You can edit the extrusion if you wanted to and change all that if you need to. But in in general, we we don't need to mess with this too much. So to change the symbol, we wanna click on the symbol up here, and you can either hit edit family here or you can hit the edit family button up here, or honestly, you could even just double click it.

There's multiple ways to get into this window. So now that we're in this symbol view, we actually probably should turn on this thin lines, button up here. If it's not up here in this quick access toolbar, you can go up to the view and then click on thin lines. And what that does is it just kind of unbold it a little bit so you can at least click on the symbol itself to be able to make some changes to it. So over here, you can see how there's, like, layers of things that are kind of on top of each other.

There's a button here, preview visibility on, and then you can go up here to this family type. And let's say I wanna change how GFI looks. So I'm gonna turn off everything except GFI. Hit okay, and now that's a lot easier to click. So when I click on this, you can see how there's the shaded area for GFI.

And to verify this is the GFI one, come over here to the properties window and go up here to this little tiny equal sign on the far right side. So if you click that, you can see that the visibility for this shaded region is tied to the GFI property. So when that when that when this toggle is turned on and off, it'll turn the visibility of this shaded region on or off. Alright. So let's say you wanna change this.

Instead of shading the two outside edges, you wanna shade the inside edge. So all we do is we're gonna go up here to edit sketch and actually, maybe I can turn back on. Yeah. So you wanna play around with this thin line. Sometimes it's useful to have on, sometimes it's not. So, like, clearly, if oops. If this was on right now, it's really hard to see that line. So I turn the feature off, and then now I can actually draw in the shape that I want. So for example, let's maybe I wanna continue. No.

I wanna do I wanna do, like, a three point arc. So here. Perfect. And then I wanna do here to here and there. Perfect. And then gonna delete the outside edges, and there we go. So now my shading kind of in the middle. Wanna change if you wanna change your fill region, it's of, like, solid black. Let's say you wanna do something different. That's fine.

You can change your region here. You can even hit the edit and then duplicate it to completely change your fill. Let's say you wanted to fill it with a diagonal or the earth symbol or whatever you want. But generally, I usually just use a solid fill. So we hit okay and then the check mark, and there we go.

So now if I do this, you can see that it just fills in the center of this receptacle symbol. And if you want that to be your GFI, then that's all you know that's all you have to do. Let's say some people like it to, like, rotate it on its side. So if I don't know if I can actually can I rotate this right here? Oh, I can. Okay. So let's say, yeah, you want that symbol side to side instead of up to down. I mean, you could do something like that too. So once you have this all configured, you can turn off your oh, that's right. I had there's another symbol in here.

This is probably the weatherproof one. Yeah. That's the weatherproof. So weatherproof uses the same GFI symbol, and basically, it appends an extra tag to it for WP for weatherproof. Again, you can change it if you want, or you can make up your own symbol. So this is kind of your symbol playground. Make up the symbol or changes that you want, and then we're gonna load this into the receptacle. So load in and close. And then over here is when you wanna check the receptacle first. I don't wanna load it directly in the project.

I wanna put it in the receptacle and then load the receptacle into the family. So if I hit okay, I don't need to save this right now. Overwrite. And then now that the symbol is overwritten, I can take this symbol and load it into my project. So now, do not save this.

I don't really wanna save this project. Now that I'd or change the orientation of the symbol, this is now my GFI symbol. Never seen one look like this before, but maybe someone has it this way. So, yeah, that's my g f GFI symbol. This line is the above countertop symbol, and all of that is pretty adjustable. And there you go. That's how you change the symbology of the receptacle.
