Creating Enlarged Views with Callouts and Advanced Pipe Tagging

Hey guys, Ryan here. And in this video, we're going to review how to create enlarged views and we're going to add those enlarged views to a sheet and create a call out to reference that enlarged view. So to create enlarged views, we'll expand views, go to plumbing and sheet views, and we're going to expand enlarged. We'll double click on view one. And already you'll see that right now we have this crop region or crop boundary associated with this floor plan.
Sometimes this might be off the page or something and you won't see anything, but all you have to do is if you ever have a case like this, if you double click the middle mouse wheel, it will expand your crop, but then go ahead and zoom out. And then always, you can always uncheck crop view and then you can move this crop boundary around into your view and then click crop again. And now you've cropped. Now, what we want to do is we want to crop an area that we're going to enlarge. So right now this is the scale is set to a quarter inch per foot.
So we're going to enlarge this area right here. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take this crop region and I'm just going to grab it and drag it all the way over. And we're going to zoom in on this part of the building, something like this. All right, that looks good. So once I have my crop region, I can basically begin to set up the rest of my plan.
Now I'm noticing this is the drain waste vent or DWV, and I can't see the sanitary below. So what we need to do is we need to go to our view template. So in this properties of this floor plan, you can see that there's a view template associated with this. So we're going to click on P sheet enlarged and let's look at the view template properties. Right now we have the view scale as a quarter inch per foot.
I'm actually going to increase this to half inch. You usually don't want to do this, but I'm just showing for instruction. And then we also want to change the view range. So I'm going to hit edit here. And now remember, since this is on a view template, any enlarged plan I create is going to have these properties.
Okay. If I want to change the view range per different views, I can always uncheck this, but I'm going to keep it like this, but I want to change the associated level right here instead of negative two, let's make it negative three. And then for the view depth, we're going to make it the same negative three and hit okay. And we can hit apply to make the change and view it and then we can just hit okay. Okay, that looks pretty good.
And so you'll see that, you know, we've made that change and this is looking great. So now what we're going to do is we're going to go to our floor plan. So I'm going to go into the water or drain waste vent plans, expand them, and we're going to go to plumbing one and double click. And we just created that enlarged plan of this area, and so I need to call it out. So we're going to create a callout to reference that new view.
So to create a callout, we're going to go to view, callout, hit the dropdown, and we're going to use a rectangle. If you need to do a different kind of shape, you can use the sketch, but we'll use rectangle. And before I place the callout, I'm gonna click this reference other view. Now I like to use this technique because that way my callout boundary is not restrictive to my crop boundary. So just trust me, this is a better method.
So I'm gonna click into reference other view, and then we can click this dropdown here and we can select that view that we created. Now, I don't remember the name, so we can always go back. So let's say I didn't remember the name. Let's go to here and you can see that this view is right here and it's highlighted. If you ever forget, you can right click and say, find in project browser and it'll highlight for you. And then we can click slowly and then we can copy this to the clipboard. And then we can go back to our view. And remember we were creating a call out and before we did it, we clicked out. So we have to do it again. We're going to reference another view and then I can just paste that piece of text that I had in there.
And then here it is right here. Now, if I didn't, if I knew a little bit of the name, like enlarged, I could just type this in. You could see it still shows up. So we're going to use this one, the one we created. And then now we're going to create the call out. So I'm gonna click and then we'll click maybe right here, like that. That looks pretty good. Now you'll notice that the call out head right here, that's supposed to reference what sheet it's on is empty. And that's because we haven't actually put the enlarged view onto a sheet. So let's do that.
So let's scroll down to sheets and we'll go to P and we're going to go to enlarge plans, etcetera. And you can see we already have one, a sheet created for the DWV system, drain waste vent. And then once we put it on the sheet, so we're going to go up to the enlarged plans, this one right here, and we're just going to drag it in and there it goes. And we'll just put it in the center right here and we'll click and hit escape. And look at that.
We've put this enlarged plan on this sheet and let's check our view. So let's go back to the plumbing one. And now you'll notice that our callout head has been updated because we placed that enlarged view on our sheet. So that's a really good technique for how to create an enlarged view and add it to a sheet. Let's do it one more time for the water plan.
And so right now I'm going to double click into the enlarged water. And right now you can see the crop region is, you know, the whole building, but if we wanted to zoom in on this location, we could just move the crop region around, something like this. We could just move it like that, move it here. And I would like to show the water coming into the building. So I'm going to edit the view range.
So let's go to the view template of this view, scroll down. And right now it's on P sheet enlarged water. Now for this, we're going to do it a little differently. So I do want to change the view scale for all of, you know, my enlarged plans to half an inch, But for the view range, I don't really want to change the view range for all of my enlarged plans because typically the water plans are from the slab to the bottom of the slab of the level above. So basically floor to floor.
So I don't really want to, you know, go to edit and change the bottom to negative three or something because that's going to affect every single enlarged view that I have in my project that's on this view template. So a better way to do it would be to remove the view range from the view template, hit okay. And now what I can do is I can have access to the view range for this view only. So I'm going to hit edit and then we'll change the bottom to negative three. And we'll change the depth to negative three.
Click okay. And now I can see my water piping right here. That looks good. Now another thing I might want to do is, you know, we had that other plan where we used single line for all the water and that looked okay. But now that we have half inch here, we could, you know, crank that up so that we can see double line pipe.
So we can get an idea of how big this pipe is when it's in the chase and stuff. So I'm going to actually go back into the view template and for the display mode, I'm going to exclude that as well. Well, sorry, detail level, instead of medium, I'm going to exclude it because I do want it to be medium for most of my plans. So I'm going to exclude it. And then again, we're going to go to basically the detail level, but it's right here, medium, but we can also go down here.
There's also a button right here that we can change the detail level. So we'll change it to fine. And now I've basically changed the detail level so I can see the thickness of this pipe. Now you normally wouldn't do this on water plans, but for this, you know, example I wanted to show you guys. But now, you know, the only problem with this is I can't see my drop symbols and stuff, but I can see the fittings and everything. So that is helpful. So it's something to consider. All right. So we have this new enlarged view. Let's go ahead and create a call out on the water plan.
So let's go up to our water plans, plumbing one water, And we have this, everything's annotated already. So we're going to go back to view, call out, hit the dropdown, rectangle. We're gonna reference another view. I don't remember what it's called, but I'm just gonna start typing in enlarged and we have water right here, click it, and then we'll make our rectangle. And I wanna do something where it's not over, like over, there we go, something like this because I don't want it to overlap that text.
And once we make the callout boundary, we can always hit escape and then click on it again and then edit these boundaries, something like that. And that looks pretty good. And now remember, it's not referencing where it is on the sheet because we haven't placed it on the sheet yet. Let's So go down to our sheets and we got our enlarged planes here. We'll double click the water.
It's empty right now, but we'll scroll up and we'll find our water here and we'll just drag it over and we'll click And there we go. Now we've been placed our enlarged water plan on our sheet and let's check to make sure it updated on our floor plan. And there we go. You can see that it's now referencing the detail one on sheet P202. Now, if I want to change the location of this callout head, if I click on the callout head, you'll see these grips.
Now, if I click into this, you'll also see the grips. So I can move this call out head by clicking this grip right here and moving it to anywhere I want. So we can move it to the other side here, maybe something like that. That looks pretty good. And I could do the same for the other one. So if I go back to my 201, well, sorry, let's go back to the floor plans here. Let's check on Level one, drain waste VAT. And I can also edit the call out from the sheet if I just double click into the view. And then I click on the call out, I can edit this head location to over here. And so I could kind of keep it consistent.
Sometimes what I'll do is I'll actually You can copy the callout from sheet to sheet or from view to view. So let's say that I had it here and I wanted the exact callout size and location on my other plan, I could literally select the call out, copy it to the clipboard. And then if I went to my other plan, which was my water plan, so I'm double click into that. I can double click into this view. And now I can literally paste it.
If I go to modify, paste, align to current view, you can see we've now pasted that call out to this sheet or this view. And now if I click on my call out, since I'm using the reference other view technique, I can now just replace this with any view I want. So I could literally replace it with this view and look at that. And now I literally have pasted a call out that's in the exact same location from one view to another. And I still have the other one that we created right here.
So they're both referencing the same view. So I could literally just delete one of them and we could use that technique to kind of get the same location of this call out head. So that is a technique that I'll use from time to time. But I kind of don't like it intersecting my text. So I'm going go down here and I'm going go something like that. And there we go. Okay. So we just went over a lot of different ways to create enlarged plans and remove properties from view templates and also creating call outs. And so let's just take a look at our final product. So we got plumbing or P101 and let's go to P101D.
We've created this call out on this view. And that's referencing detail one on P201. So let's double check that P201 right here. You can see it's detail number one. If we want to change the name of this, we can click into this view and then click on the name. And I'm just going to call it enlarged view dash drain waste vet. And then if I want to move the view title, I can just move it to a point right here. Click on my view again, and then we can decrease this line. Do something like that. That looks pretty good.
So let's review the water. So let's go to our P101. And we created that call out here. And it's referencing detail number one on P202. So let's go to P202. And there we go. This is detail one on P202. And now I want to move this to the middle right here. We'll click on our view and move this. But I want to first rename it. So let's click on our view and then click into the view title. We're going to call this enlarged view water. Hit enter. And then again, click on our view, click the head or the grip. And we can now move this if we need to move it a little bit, something like that looks pretty good.
And that's how to create the callouts. And the last thing we might want to do is do some annotations. And so I'm going go, we'll start with our P201 plan, we'll double click. And I'd like to start annotating this plan. So I'm actually going to double click into it. First, we'll go to annotate, tag all, We'll select our plumbing fixture tags, hit okay. They've been placed. If we want to move them, we can select the tag, move it to a different location. I'm gonna select this tag, move it here. I'm gonna select this tag.
We'll move it right here. Select the urinal tag, move it up here. I'm gonna nudge it up with my arrow keys. Put the floor drain. Maybe we'll put that one here. And the nice thing about Revit is it snaps so we can kind of keep those consistent. So we can keep all three of these consistent like that. That looks kind of cool. And then let's try something fancy. I want to basically have this location over here.
So let's see if we can just delete this and then we'll delete this one, this tag as well. So I'm gonna select it and hit delete. And then let's see if we can copy these to the clipboard. So I'm going to hold control here and then I'm going to use the mirror pick axis and we'll pick the axis right here. We want to make sure copy selected. So we'll pick this and it did work, but it looks like the floor drain might've been located in a different location. It really didn't work. So we just have to eyeball it, something like that. That looks good. All right.
So we have that And then we might want to tag some pipes. So I'm gonna go to annotate, tag by category this time, and we'll hover into our pipe. Now the last tag we used is this four inch VTR. If we wanna change it, we can go to tags and we can go down to pipe and we can change this to our rotate tag. So I'm going to go to P tag rotate and I want to make it transparent. I'm going to show you actually, let's go to opaque first. I want to show you guys the difference. We'll click okay. And then we're going to click leader because I don't need a leader. And then we'll tag this piece right here and we'll hit escape.
Now you'll notice that this one it's opaque, meaning that the background is white so you can clearly see the text. But I kind of like to use the transparent one. So if we click into the tag and click the type selector right here, we can change it to transparent. And I do think this looks a little nicer. So if I want to do another tag like this, I can click the tag, right click and say create similar.
And then we can start tagging the insides of our pipe just like this. I can put one right here, put one over here and put one here and right here. I'm going to select my floor cleanout tag and we'll move this up, something like that. And then we have this floor sink right here. Let's go ahead and select that tag and move it up. We don't really need to tag our water heater in the sanitary plan, but we can. So I'm going to just go ahead and do tag by category and select that and hit escape. That looks good. And then we need to tag our vent piping. So let's go to annotate, tag by category.
And another technique we can use instead of going to the tags right here, all we have to do is place a tag. So if we place this one right here and hit escape, okay, but we want to change the type. So I'm going to click on it and we'll click the dropdown and we're going to search for vent and we're going to go to the vent rotate. We'll use the opaque one And you can see it looks a little better with the opaque because it kind of cuts the pipe a little bit. So if I want to create another one, I can hover into the tag, right click and say create similar.
And then we can put another one up here just like that. And we'll put one right here, just like that. And then what I'd like to do is do a VTR tag, which stands for vent through roof. And the vent through roof is going to be this location right here. So we're going to do one more tag. So again, I'm going to create a tag right here, I'm just gonna select this tag, right click and say create similar. And then I wanna make sure I get this two inch vent. So I'm gonna hover into it. I'm gonna use a leader though. So we're gonna hover into it and we're gonna click, then we're gonna hit escape, and then we can select the tag that we just created, move it.
And I wanna change it to the VTR tag. So I'm gonna click into it, use the type selector, and then we'll start typing in VTR or just select it right here. And there we go, we have this VTR tag. And then I can just move this over to about right here. And if I wanna point right in the middle of that, I can basically click on my tag and select free end. And then I have access to move this arrow like that, hit escape. Now we have a VTR that's referencing this pipe that's going through the roof. So that's looking great. So we're pretty much done with this drain waste vent plan. Let's double click the water and let's start tagging this one.
Now I've already tagged the fixtures in my other view, so I'm actually going to go back to that view, double click into it, and then we'll double click into this view. And I'm going to select all the tags here. I'm going to right click, select all instances visible in view, and it will pick up all the tags for my plumbing fixtures. I'm going to copy it to the clipboard by going up here. Then we'll go to our P202 double click, and then I'm going to double click into the view.
And then we'll simply modify and paste it aligned to the current view. Now it's going to give us this warning because there were some elements that it couldn't tag because they're hidden. Things like the floor drains or floor sinks and the clean out up here, they're not in this view. So Revit's gonna say, Hey, we can't tag those because they don't have a host. That's fine. We're gonna hit escape here and hit escape. And you can see all of my tags went through and now I need to tag my water heater. So we'll just go to annotate, tag by category, and we'll just hover into the water heater. I don't need a leader. So I'm gonna uncheck that.
We're gonna tag this RPC, move it up, and let's just start tagging some piping. So we're in the tag command right now, so it's gonna automatically tag it, but remember it's gonna use the last tag we use. So we can just click and then we'll change the tag by hitting escape, selecting the tag, and then we'll use our type selector. We want to use the rotate tag. So I'm going to start typing in rotate and you can see we got the opaque one.
We can use that one. We'll hit escape and then we want to use the same one. So we'll right click, say create similar, and then we can just start tagging our cold water, tag it all over the place, maybe tag one here, one here, and one here. And we'll tag one here, one here, tag one here, here, and here. That looks pretty good. And let's do some more tags. I'm going use TG as a shortcut this time. We'll just tag that. And then I'd like to tag the pipes in here, maybe this one and this one. And then we can maybe tag at this point right here, hit escape.
So that looks good. If you guys need to tag your branch pipes or your supply connections, you can basically use a leader tag. So I'm going to right click this tag, right click, say create similar. I'm going to select leader. And then let's say if I wanted this piece right here, you'll notice it's rotating with the pipe, but that's not what I want. So I'm going to click it, hit escape. And then if I select the tag, I can change it. So we'll change it to the leader type. So pipe tag leader, no suffix. There we go.
And then we could move this. But you'll notice if I want to move it like right here, but I want to pick the middle of that pipe, remember I change it from attached end to free end. Then I have the little grip right here and then I could do something like this. That looks good. And then if I want another one, here's a cool technique.
All I have to do is select the tag, hold control and drag it up. And you'll notice that like the same tag and then release and release control. And now we have this tag that's the same as this one, but the only thing is it's actually referencing this piece of pipe right here. We need the reference of this piece right here. So what we can do is we can say, pick new host and click on our pipe. And now it's referencing this piece. And now if we click on select host, you can see the host highlights. So we know that it's actually referencing this one. I'm going to hit escape there. I'm going to select my tag.
And since it's free end, I can just simply move it right there. Look, just like that. If I want to do another one of these, can use the same technique. I'm going to click the tag, hold control. We're going to drag it over, something like this. And then I'm going to select this one. But remember, it's still referencing this pipe. We can know that by saying select host. It's still using this pipe as the reference. So to change that, we click on our tag. We're gonna pick new host. We'll pick this one. All right. You'll really see it in this example right here. So I'm gonna use this tag.
I'm gonna hold control. I'm gonna drag it over and then let go. And right now it's referencing this pipe. But if I wanna reference this piece right here, if I do pick new host, I can click this one and look, it changed the size and we'll select it right there. I want to also pick this one.
So I'm going to click on this tag and now I'm going to say add or remove host. So we're going to add this pipe too. Now, if you select a different one, you kind of see like varies and that's because Revit is saying, Hey, there's two different sizes you're referencing, so it won't give you a value. But if you pick the same size, it will. So click on the same size, hit escape, and now I need to change these leader locations. So I'm going to go right there and we're gonna change this to right there. There we go. And then I wanna do the same thing with the hot water. So maybe if I put it up here, let's do Or maybe we'll put it over here. So I'm gonna take this tag.
I'm gonna hold control. We're gonna move it up here or drag it. Now we have this half inch. Remember, we need to now select a new host or pick a new host basically. But first we can't just pick the new host because it's referencing two. Let's remove one and we'll remove, let's say remove this one first. And now when we click on the tag, we can pick a new host. We'll pick on this one and you can see the system changes. We'll move the tag a little over and then we'll move this point over. We'll move this point over.
And then I want to reference this piece. So we're going to add and remove host. We'll add this host. We'll drag this down. And then I can kind of like mess around with this if I want to do something like this. All right, that looks pretty good. And maybe we'll drag this down a little just like that. What's cool about Revit is we can also click on this tag and kind of move it if we need to. So it's not intersecting that door. That looks great.
So that's another technique for how to tag your branch piping or use these leader tags and how to select hosts and all that kind of stuff. So we went over a lot of stuff there. So that's it. That's how you create enlarged plans, how you create callouts and also how you tag enlarged views and use pipe tags.
