Hey, guys, I'm EP Guy here. In this video, we're going to go over how to model the sanitary and vent system. So let's start off by going to our fixtures over here, and we're going to create a sanitary line that goes right in the middle of all these fixtures, goes into the shop area, and goes out the building at a point right here. So anytime I'm drawing my sanitary piping, I start from the end first. So we're gonna go to systems, pipe, and this time we're gonna select the pipe types and make it drainage.
And we'll set our diameter, we can make it four inches. And then for the elevation, I usually draw my piping at negative two. We're not gonna slope the piping for this, we'll go over how to slope piping in a separate video. And for system type, I'm going to select P sanitary and vent. Now we put the sanitary and the vent system on the system classification sanitary. And that's because they're both connected. It's best to keep all the pipes that are going to be connected on the same system. And so that's why they're both on sanitary. So then we can just hover into this area right here. And since we already drew this construction line, I can start my piping at about a point right here and click.
And then we'll go off to the right and into the hallway or the shop area and click. And you can see the piping gets made. And then we'll go to a point about right here and click. We'll hit escape twice. And now we have our piping drawn just like this below the floor.
Now you always need to make sure that you check your view range. So if we go to our view range over here, right now it's being controlled by the template. So if we click our template, if we click into the view range right here and edit it, we can edit the view range of this view template called P working all shaded. Now, if we don't want the view range in our template, we can simply deselect it from the template and hit Okay. And now we have access to change it per each view.
So I just wanted to go over that real quick. So now we have our sanitary piping drawn. Let's go ahead and connect this water closet into the sanitary piping. Now there's a cool way we can do this. If we click on one of our water closets and we have a connection right here. You can barely see it. There's two connectors right here. This one is the sanitary vertical down. And so we're gonna use that to connect it into this piece of pipe. So or connect into, and we go to sanitary vertical down.
You can see that connector right here. We'll click Okay, and we'll click our pipe. You can see we've automatically drawn our piping into this pipe, which is great. And now what we need to do is we need to draw our piping from the bottom of this fixture into this pipe right here. Now I'm just gonna try to connect it into it. So we'll click it, connect into, and this time we'll use the connector down here, which is the sanitary on fixture. Click Okay and select our pipe. But you can see that nothing happened. Now, what we need to do is we actually need to draw this piping by hand. So I'm gonna click this piece right here and hit Delete.
And then what we'll do is we'll click on our fixture and we'll select this little icon right here and we'll move our piping down to like negative one. And then we can kind of start drawing pipe off in this direction. But unfortunately, we're snapping to a reference plane again. So we need to go up to automatically click connect and deselect that and click. And you can see now we have that connection.
Now you can notice that we are not gonna have enough space to make this connection. So if you wanna move your piping down, if I click my pipe right here and I move it down to negative three and hit enter, now you can see I have plenty of space to make that connection. So I'm going to use trim extend. So I'm going go to modify, trim extend single element. We're going to click on our target and click our source, and you can see that connection gets made.
Now, unfortunately, I can tell that this is the wrong pipe type. This is going to happen to you guys a lot, but luckily what we can do is we can just select all the piping that's on the wrong pipe type. So if I select this, you can see that it's on the standard pipe type. If I just select all of it and then I go up to change type, I can now change the type of piping to P drainage and you can see all the pipe fittings and pipe gets changed to the drainage piping, which is what I want. Now what I need to do is I need to change this to a sanitary tee so I can select it, go to the type selector, and we can change it to P or to P T sanitary.
So we'll hit standard here and this is the type of fitting that we can use. Now, what we need to do is we need to create a double type fitting because we wanna also connect to our water closet over here. So if I select my T, I can hit the plus here and it will change to a double. Now I have to do the same thing. Click on our double, go to the type selector and change it to the PT reducing double sanitary standard. And now we have a nice connector. Now what I can do is I can just start drawing some piping here and we can connect into it. But first I need a little piece right here. So if I click this and I right click, you can see I don't have the option to draw pipe, but that's because I didn't click the connector correctly. I just have to reconnect that connector and now I can draw a pipe.
And then if we go off to this way, you can see Revit is kind of going at 90 degrees. That's what I want. I'm gonna click and now we have that. And now if we use connect into, we can connect there. So if we click on our fixture, connect into, select sanitary on fixture, which is this one right here, and we can select this guy and the connection gets made. So that looks great. Now what I can do is I'd like to add a wall clean out here. So if I go to system, plumbing fixture, we can hit the type selector, and we're gonna select wall clean out. If I need to search all my different plumbing fixtures, I can start typing wall. You can see I have this PD wall connection or clean out fixture.
We'll select the four inch. And now we have this. We're gonna hit the space bar twice and we'll click right into a point right there. That looks great. And now if I want to make the connection to that, I can go in a three d view and make the connection or I can do it from a floor plan. Let's do it from a three d. We'll click on our wall clean out. We'll use connect into, click sanitary vertical down that connector right there, and then click our pipe and you can see that gets made perfectly. Now, right now I have thin lines turned on. And so if you wanna turn that off, you can use this button right here or this quick access tool.
Now, if I wanna add tools to this quick access toolbar, I can do it by clicking any tool and right clicking and say add to quick access toolbar. And you could see the little tool gets added right here. Also, Revit starts, the toolbar is at the top. So if I wanna change that, I can say show above the ribbon, and it goes up here. But the only problem with that is now it starts adding tools in this little dropdown because it doesn't have enough space.
So what I like to do is always click this little dropdown here and say show below the ribbon, and now I have all these tools up here. So anyway, if we click on thin lines and hit cancel, you can see now it's showing up as thick lines and I can see my piping much better. So I kind of like this and this is the way it's going to print. Alright. So let's continue on. Let's also connect our urinal. So we have this urinal right here. And what I wanna do is I wanna make the connection from the back of this fixture down. So I wanna use this connector. So if I use connect into, I'm gonna select the sanitary horizontal connector right here.
Click okay and click my sanitary. And you can see that connection gets made. I'm going to need a T here. So I'm going to click on my elbow and click the plus. And we're going to change this combo to a T. So we'll use the P2P. There we go. And we're going to draw the vent piping last. And then we're going to do the same thing with this one. We'll select it, use connect into, and we'll use the sanitary vertical down. You can see it's right here. Click Okay and click our main. And then that connection gets made. Now you'll notice with the lavatories that we already have P traps drawn in the lavatory. You can also draw the P traps by hand.
So if I want to do that, I can click my fixture and I need to remove this little P trap first. So if I click it, I go to my instance on the properties palette and I can change the three d P trap visible and toggle that off. You can see it turns it off. And then if I wanna start drawing piping, I can click my fixture. I can click this little draw pipe button, make sure it's on the correct pipe type. We'll select drainage. We can drop it down to like one foot six and then we can kind of go over in this direction. You can see it's taking some time and then we can tee that into there. So we'll go to modify trim extend and click those. And again, we have a combo here.
We'll make it a double sanitary tee just like that. And that looks pretty good. And then if we want a P trap, we can select our elbow and simply hit the dropdown and change it to a P trap. So it's right at the top. There we go. So that looks great. Now, what I can do is since I did all that work, I can simply mirror this over and make it work. So again, if you want to select everything in the branch, you can hover into any of the piping, hit tab and click. You can see we have all that branch piping selected. Now we'll click into our floor plan and we'll use the copy command, pick axis, and we'll make sure we copy it.
Sorry, mirror command. We'll select this line right here. And then you can see that we've automatically created that P trap over here. But remember, we need to hide the P trap that's in the fixture. So if we select it, we can now go down to the different instance, visibilities and deselect three d P trap visible. So if you want to model your P traps like this, you can totally do that. So now let's go ahead and connect the double sync over here. You can see we already had some sanitary drawn. So if we zoom out, we need to make a combo here. So if I click my elbow and I click the plus, you can see it now makes a combo.
And then I'd like to start drawing my sanitary over and connect it into here. Now you can also use connect into with fittings. So if I click a fitting that has an opening, I can use connect into right here. So if I'm gonna I'm gonna zoom out a little bit, we'll use connect into, and then you can see the connection is gonna be made here. Let's zoom in and click this button, and you can see that connection gets made. Now, unfortunately, I didn't have it at the same elevation, so it made this drop right here. So that's not great, but we can fix that if we just highlight all this, hit delete. And then what I can do is I can move this down to negative three. There we go. And then again, remember, if we want to select a branch, we can hit Tab and select that branch, change it to two inches.
And then we can go ahead and trim extend this just like that. So that looks great. So this is looking good. Now I'd probably not use a two inch pipe right there because it's dropping. It's gonna drop like much further because we have to make the slope a little more. So if I wanted to make it maybe three inches, let's go ahead and just make this whole main three inches right here. I just wanna show you guys how to do that. So I'm gonna select these two pieces right here, holding shift or control. So if you wanna select multiple elements, you select one, hold control, and you can select another one. And then what we can do is we can change the diameter to three inches.
And what I'd like to do is change this to a combo. So I'm gonna hit the plus here, and then I wanna keep drawing piping because I wanna put a clean out up here. So if I click on my fitting, right click, draw pipe, and we'll draw it to a point about right there. Now I'm gonna put a floor clean out. So I'm gonna go up to systems, plumbing fixture, and we'll start typing in clean out up here.
You can see we have PD floor clean out right here, and we'll just set it right there. Now this is a four inch clean out. If we need to change it, we can click on the clean out and we can go to edit type, and then we can change the pipe diameter to three inches. But usually I want to create a new type, I'm going to duplicate this one. We'll go to three inches and then we'll go to pipe diameter three inches, change it. Okay, so now it's a three inch clean out and then we can use connect into by selecting the clean out right here. Let's hover over connect into and click our pipe. There we go. So now we've created a clean out. That looks great.
So we also need some drains. So let's go ahead and add those. Let's go to plumbing fixture. And first, we'll add some floor drains in the bathrooms. So I'm gonna start typing in drain. You can see we have this drain right here. It's a two inch. I'm gonna put it about right here because I want it to be in the middle of this pipe and we can always move it after the fact. So I'm gonna go ahead and move it to maybe the middle right here. This is looking good.
And then I'm gonna connect it into there so we can do it in a three d view if we'd like. So we can click on this, use connect into, and then it's this piece right here that it's gonna connect to. And then, like I said, once I make that connection, I can now move this drain. So I'm going to just go hover to the arrow to the left. And let's kind of put it right there.
And I can also go in maybe to something like this so it's not in the way of my walking path. It doesn't really matter. And then what I need to do is I need to change this to a P trap. So we'll go to the Properties Type Selector and select P trap, and you can see the trap gets put on the floor drain. Now unfortunately though, if we want to have two drains and we want to vent those individually, we might want to actually have this up more and go down into it, just like we have our water closets. So let's do that. So I'm going to actually show you guys how to delete piping correctly. So we want to delete this T. We could just delete it, and then we could trim these two together by using the TR shortcut. And that's how you can do that.
And then we can move this up to, I don't know, negative one. You can see that gets moved up, and then we can make the connection right here. So we could use trim extend. So I'm going to go to modify, trim extend. We're going to select our target and our source. And you can see Revit is saying there's not enough space there. So that's why I had to move the piping over. So let's just arrow over just to there. We'll use the trim extend again and we'll select it. And you can see we still don't have enough space, so we have to keep going maybe to this spot.
Let's try it one more time. And there you go. So Revit's just being really finicky about that, but once it's over there, you can totally move it back. So I can just kind of drag it over just like that, and then it's back. And then if I wanna make a double, if I click this plus here, it's going to make a combo in the wrong orientation, and that's not what I want. I'm gonna control z. So what we have to do is we have to draw a pipe up first or just make the combo up. And then now though, we don't have that little plus button. And that's because we need to start drawing piping up before it's gonna give us access to that. So what I typically do is instead of doing it like that, what I'll do is I'll just delete this and then I'll drag this up.
And then oops. When I dragged it up, it actually said there wasn't enough space here, which is not true, but that's Revit. So let's go ahead and do it the other way. I'm gonna hit control Z. So what we can do is we can hit plus here, and then we can start drawing piping up. So I'm gonna right click, draw pipe. We're gonna move it to, I don't know, two feet above the floor, hit apply. And then once we have piping here, now when we click our combo, we have access to the plus here. You can see it makes a double sanitary T. And then we're just gonna mirror all this.
So I'm gonna tab into all that and it selected the fixture and the branch and then we'll mirror it. So let's go to the mirror command, pick axis, and then we'll select right here. Oops. We need to be in this view, so we'll hit tab, we'll hit control, and we'll select all that stuff. We'll then hit the mirror command, make sure copy selected and hit the red line right there. And you can see that gets mirrored over there. Now there's no connection right here. You can't really tell. So if you ever need to check if a connection was made, you can go up to analyze, show disconnects, and select pipe. And you can see that Revit's telling us there's a disconnection right here.
I just happen to know that because when you mirror something, it doesn't automatically connect those pipes. But once we go ahead and just connect those by just dragging it and dragging it back in, you can see that little arrow or warning sign goes away. Now we also have warning signs all over the place, and that's because there's all these open connectors that we use in our fixtures. So you can kind of just ignore those. We also remember we mirrored this one, so there was a disconnect here.
So we just have to make sure we make that connection, and that looks great. So I'm gonna go back to show disconnects and we'll deselect pipe, and we'll hit okay, and there we go. Now I'm going to go ahead and start drawing the vent piping. And so to draw that piping, what we need to do is we need to change the pipe type first. So we have this piece right here, and maybe this is going to be the main piece that goes up through the building. So depending on your plumbing code that you're using, it might have to be the same size as your drain, but typically it can be like two inches. So we'll change it to two inches. And then we'll also change the pipe type to vent. And there we go. I don't need this little piece right here, so I'm just going to delete it.
And then we'll we'll drag this thing up. Now we want to go above the roof. So what I'm going to do is use a section. I'm going to go to the section that we already have for you guys right here. And then I'm just going to move that section up to a point about right here. And then to go to the section, we'll right click, go to view, and then we're at the section. And then I'm just going to go ahead and select this vent piping right here, just like that. And then we'll just drag it up. We'll go above the roof. And then typically I just select the pipe and go to an elevation that makes sense.
Maybe we'll make it 22 foot six. There we go. So we have plenty of space for our vent piping on our roof and that's going to be the vent through the roof. And then the rest of the vent piping, I can keep it in the chase or I can go up above the ceiling depending on what you're trying to do. So let's just go above the ceiling because that's what most people are gonna do. So to do that, we can do it pretty easily. If we go in a section view, we can actually right click the pipe and say create similar, and then we can just start drawing piping to the right. The connection doesn't get made and that's because we had that setting on. So if we right click and say draw pipe, you can see we have automatically connect, deselected. So let's make sure it's on this time.
And so I'm going to hit delete. And now if I try to draw the piping, if I right click create similar, automatically connect is on and it should make the connection. There we go. So now that I have this piece going this way, I can actually set it to the correct elevation. I could maybe set it to like 11 feet. It just depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Typically, set all of my water piping at 10 foot, all of my hot water at 10 foot three and my vent piping at 11. All right, so now we have this one up And what we want to do is we want to make a connection to this lavatory here. So I can use my trim extend command. First, I want to change this pipe type.
So we'll select it, we'll change it to vent, and then we can make that connection. So I'm going to use trim, trim extend, it worked. And then I want to connect this into this one. So if I click my fitting, remember it has an opening, so we can use connect into and we can select our vent piping and look at that. And then I want to do the same thing here. If I click this, if I change it to vent, then I can use my trim extend command. So I'm going go to modify, trim extend, single element, and click here. And you can see now I have all of those vent connections made. Look at that. That looks great.
All right. So now we want to continue off to the right because we need to also add some vent piping over here. Now we could obviously route it across the building, but we could also make a separate vent through the roof right here. And so that's what I think I'm going to do. I'm just going to go ahead and kind of drag this over. Now, can also rotate the piping when it has an elbow. So if I rotate this around, I can rotate it anywhere I want. But if we wanna go straight ahead, you can see Revit will snap for us. And then I wanna go up through the roof. You can also do right click, draw pipe.
And you can't go up in a three d view unless you change the elevation. So let's change it to that 23 feet. And then if we hover back into the view, you can see it kind of snaps, and then we can hit apply here. And that the reason I made this offset is because you don't want your vent piping right at the roof. Alright? And then we can kind of bring this up to a higher elevation. So if I go to my elevation right here, you can see we can't see this piece over here. So we need to move our elevation. Let's go back to our working plan. And what we can just do is extend this extents right here to there.
And then if we go back to our section, you can now see our vent piping. And I wanna bring this, maybe I wanna offset it right at the top. Well, actually I don't. I would probably offset it right here. So we'll keep it at 11 foot. I'm gonna undo that and let's just do something like that. That looks good. We might even wanna bring it over because I wanna have at least two feet between the wall here or the parapet in this vent piping. So that looks good. All right.
So then the last thing we might wanna do is add a floor drain in the water service room. So let's go back to the working plan and to add a floor drain. Remember, we go to systems, plumbing fixture, select our type selector, and we have, let's add a floor sink this time. No, great. And we'll put that right in front of the backflow preventer right there and hit escape. And then what we can do is we can just use our connect into. So from a three d view, can just click it and use connect into, click our pipe or main, and then we can change this to a P trap, select it, change it. And then I want to draw some vent piping off this. Maybe I want to put it in this wall right here. So to draw some vent piping, we can select some vent piping in the floor plan.
Right click, create similar. And then we're going to go ahead and drop it into this pipe right here. And then we're going to go at a 45 degree angle. Maybe we'll go to a point about right here. And then we're gonna use these other pipe routings because they're all gonna be hung at the same area. So we can kind of use a hanger for all these pipes. And then we'll just go straight off to this direction and click this way. And you can see what that looks like. And then we'll just trim extend these into one another. So first I'm going to delete this elbow, hit delete, and then we can use our trim command, TR, and just trim these together.
And use trim. And then you have to set this one to a separate keyboard shortcut. I'm using TTR. So if I click this one, I'm gonna click my target and source. And there we go. And so now I have all of my plumbing fixtures vented correctly. So this is looking great. Now that concludes the sanitary and vent system for this building. And so we are pretty much done.
