How to Create New Duct Systems

In this video, I'm gonna show how to create new duct types. So in this project, I've got a bit of exhaust air duct, and it's coming out of a kitchen. So let's say that I wanted this to be grease exhaust, grease duct. I wanted to tag as grease duct and I even want it to look different than normal exhaust air ductwork. How do I go about doing that?

Well, if you click on a bit of duct, come over here to the properties, we can see that the system type is called EA. And our options are actually just exhaust air because it's connected to a bit of exhaust air duct equipment rather. Well, if I come over here in my project browser to families and then to duct systems, you can see that we have our options here and each one of these options represents a different type of system. So this is the exhaust air system classification. Outside air is actually a part of a supply air.

Supply air and outside air are both the type of supplier. There's a return air system classification, and then my transfer air is also a return air system classification as well. So the best way to do this to create a grease exhaust is to simply come up here, right click the exhaust air and say duplicate and then rename it grease exhaust. Let's see that let's say that GE is your standard nomenclature for that. And then if I click this and I select the drop down, I've now got an option for exhaust air and grease exhaust.

And the reason these are an option is because Revit knows that grease exhaust is a the system classification is exhaust is exhaust air. And the system classification for grease exhaust is exhaust air because I duplicated it from the exhaust air system. So if you want a new type of exhaust system, you need to duplicate from an exhaust air. If you want a new type of supplier system, need to duplicate from supplier, etcetera. I'm gonna set this to grease exhaust, and this will have changed all of this.

See, I I just changed one of these system types, just this bit, but this whole run is now GE. We've got a little bit more work to do, and you also may have noticed that the fill for this went away. We will get to that, and that is because of a filter. So first of all, let's go to our GE duct system, right click, type properties, and we can see that the abbreviation here is set to GA, so we want that to be or EA rather, we want it to be GE. And if we want it to be a different color, we need to come in here and I'm not sure, let's say it's just let's say it's this color.

That's a little bit too much like return error. Maybe just this kind of pukey looking color. And okay. And okay. So this is now changed to this kind of pukey looking color.

And now we want to address the the filter. So come down here to the view template, to the m sheet view template, And then if we come into filters, this is where these fills are being applied. And if you don't want fills in any of your stuff, you'll have to turn this off anyways. But if you do want a different fill for your grease exhaust, you need to come in here and create a filter for it. So let's go into edit new.

Let's go to M duct EA. Let's duplicate that filter. Revit puts it at the very bottom. So select again, say rename duct GE. Okay. And then the filter categories, this is just carried over from the exhaust air. It says system type equals e a. We want this to be GE. So we've now created a filter for MDOT GE. We say okay. Now we need to actually add it to our list. Click add. Go find it, MDOT GE. There it is. Say okay.

It has added it to our list. Put it next to exhaust air, and we will add an override to the pattern and the color. If I was being really fussy about this because this is a standard, of course, I would obviously refer to that and set the RGV values or the HSL values. We're making to make it this pinky color. Just gonna eyeball it. And the pattern set to solid fill. Okay. Okay. Okay. And there we go.

We've got our solid fill indicating that it's this grease exhaust pipe. So you can do this with any type of duct. You can create as many duct systems as you want. As, for example, some people have different duct systems for the different inputs and outputs of ERVs. Whatever you need, you can create.
