There is no reason you have to model everything using 3d objects in Revit. Use Detail Lines and text to quickly make markups or even SD/early DD level drawings.

K. In this video, I'm gonna show how to do either a markup in Revit or even an SD, you know, an early conceptual level design for printing on sheets inside Revit. It's the same way it's the same process either way. So I'm gonna do it on this sheet view. This is a view that belongs on sheet m one zero one.
I could just as easily do this on one of my working views or even make a duplicate of this working view and call it, you know, like, design markup or something like that and put some markups on here for the designers. But just for the purposes of this video, I'm gonna do it on this floor plan that goes on a sheet as if I were just doing a quick SD level drawing. And, again, I'm just gonna be using detail lines. I'm not gonna be using anything fancy, no families, nothing smart, nothing in three d, just a quick markup. So, you're probably used to doing markups or SD levels in Bluebeam or CAD or something like that.
It's fine to keep doing them there. This is just a video to show that it is possible, to do markups in Revit. So and and also, you know, for the purpose of this video, I'm not gonna take a whole bunch of time making sure the dimensions are correct and the design itself is gonna be probably a little funky. Don't get distracted by that. The purpose of this is just to communicate how to do some detail line drawings.
So the basic idea for this project is I'm gonna have an HU, you know, horizontal HU and heat pump for this wing, HU and heat pump for this wing, and I'm gonna have a rooftop a rooftop unit with some ducts here and, you know, just some exhaust fans and just a couple of other little things here and there. So I have mapped to my keyboard d d as a shortcut for detail line. I don't I think it's out of the box, it's box, it's d l. So if you wanna remap that, go to k s and then find detail line. Yeah.
Out of the box, it's d l. So if this just says d l for you, come down, have this row selected, type in d d, and click assign, and it will assign d d to that. And so that's more efficient than having to say DL. So I'm gonna type DD. I've got my I'm in draw detail line mode, and I'm gonna change my line style to M Equipment. And I'm gonna choose the rectangle tool. And I'm gonna draw a heat pump box here. And I'm gonna draw another heat pump box over here. And I'm gonna draw a let's see. Two foot by five two and a half foot by five foot.
That seems about right for an AHU. I'm just gonna copy that, paste it over there, and then I'm going to go back to DD equipment, and I'm gonna draw, let's see, five foot by ish foot. It seems about right. That's gonna be my rooftop unit. And I got that. Got that. Got that. And I'm gonna draw a ceiling exhaust fan. Six one by six. Alright.
Because I would take a little bit more time to make these perfectly lined up, but I'm trying to be respectful of your time here. You don't need to watch me fiddle with that. And I'll draw let's see. I'll draw a circle here, and I'll draw a that'll be a kitchen exhaust fan. Alright. That's probably enough to give you the idea in terms of mechanical equipment. Now I can go label these. So I'm gonna say underline r t u one. Alright. This is gonna be HU one.
And this is gonna be HU two. This would be heat pump two, and this would be heat pump one. And call this exhaust fan exhaust fan one, and I'm gonna call these ceiling exhaust fan one and two. There you go. That's all my equipment.
Yes. Alright. And now I'm gonna go into detail lines again, and I want to draw some return air ductwork. I'll here we go. Draw on return.
There. Like so. Draw some supplier. Of course, if I were I were doing this sort of thing a lot, I would make some some groups and blocks of things, which I'll show in a second, so I could have them as repeating elements. It's gonna come over to here.
Right. So for example, if I liked this block, if I wanted to reuse this, I could make this a group. So I'm gonna type g p that makes it a group. I'm gonna call it r t u r t one, whatever. And then, you know, if I had multiple, I could cop you know, make multiple copies of those. And the way groups work is if I make an edit to one of these, and I'm in group edit mode, if I move that so I just well, let's make something obvious. I'll just delete that line. Get that back up because it doesn't matter. Finish. So that's gonna update all the instances of that group.
Right? So that can be handy. You could create, you know, common error terminal symbols and all sorts of things that you want for your markups to make this really quite efficient if you wanted to adopt this workflow. Okay. So we've got that. Let's make let's see. Return error. Got that. Return air is gonna go there, maybe not so far. And then we're gonna have some outside air coming in from the louver and go into there.
Let's move that there. Let's move this up here. And I wanna I wanna indicate the louver on this on this drawing as well. It's gonna say l one. Right. And then let's get some supplier ductwork in here. The supplier is gonna come out, and it's gonna come around. Serve these spaces. Maybe it does something like that. Alright.
And we can do the same for this. Something of that nature. Actually, I want I actually want this to go around the other side. So I'm going delete that. Tab that. I'm gonna tap m m for the mirror command. Uncheck copy. I'm just mirrored around there. See if that makes more sense. That.
And then let's get some return air ductwork. Just needs to go into here. Don't need to go into there because that's gonna be exhausted. And then, you know, loop around. Maybe I'll maybe I'll do a sidewall. Well, let's leave it like that. And then we would like our outside air. So what I'm doing here is I'm selecting this this unit, which is the line for outside air. I'm just typing CS for create similar. So I'm just gonna create another similar line like that.
Let me do that. Show it coming in, and I'll just grab that stuff. Copy. And you can add leader lines to this. So let's see. I'm gonna justify this right. Close that up a little bit. Put it here. And then if I wanted a leader oh, no. I want a straight leader like that.
I could, of course, add that. And then I can just use some text to say outside air. If you're at the point of putting dimensions, of course, you could put that on. Outside air. Turn air.
Supplier. Okay. So obviously, this is a very basic markup or SD level layout. You know, if I were to do this a little bit more thoroughly, I might add in some air terminal symbols. But, again, just detailed lines.
You don't need to watch me doing that, but that is how I would do that. So this project is the the space of this project, right, it's a little unique because there's this high base space and then these low base spaces here. So if we go into a section, you know, it might be worth doing a markup on the section as well, which we can absolutely do, again, with just with detail lines. So detail lines, equipment, you know, can draw the tangle tool. Draw the heat pump.
I'll give it a label. That's heat pump one. You want that to be underlined. Underlined. There we go.
Copy and paste that over here. And but that we have a choice of putting the HU up on top of this ceiling lid or up in the ceiling space. I'm just gonna draw in the ceiling space for now. And then we've got our RTU up there, and we've got our HU over there. This might wanna be a little bit down a little bit.
Right. And then let's say h one. And, of course, if I were so inclined, I could also draw in duct in sections. So duct SA. Let's say we had some here.
Here. I'm just gonna copy that. Maybe got the return here. Tango there here. Something like that.
Properly aligned. So, of course, you know, generally speaking, you can do just about anything in Revit with detail lines that you wanna do in CAD. And the nice thing about this is it's now in the project. So whenever I or the designer is ready to come in, start laying out the equipment, actually bringing the families and stuff, it's all right here. They don't have to go find another file.
And you could also print this to you know, this is now on the Revit sheet. So we could print this we could print this off and include it in the SD set. We don't have to start a document set in Revit and then switch or in CAD rather and switch to CAD. So that can be a nice workflow either for markups or for, you know, SD level drawing plans. So that just to give you a taste of that.
