Placing and Adjusting Receptacles

Placing receptacles in Revit is very simple. Simply go up here to the systems tab, then over here to the electrical, and then under this drop down menu, you'll find electrical fixtures. From here, you can type in duplex or if you want it, you can put in quads. We're gonna stick with duplex for now. And then right now, we're gonna pick a standard duplex receptacle.

Now once you hover over the floor plan, you can press the space key to rotate this against any four axis. So let's go ahead and try to place a couple. Right now, I will place one maybe right here along along this wall. You'll notice that as I move close to it, it wants to snap to this wall. Now if you turn your receptacle this way, you can go ahead and snap to this other wall.

It's really handy. It helps you line it up to make sure that receptacle are flushed against the wall. Now if I come up here to casework and I want to mount this at, let's say three foot six above the finished floor, I wanna make sure that I adjust this offset from host. You can either adjust the offset from host or elevation from level, they'll both do the same thing. So I'm gonna type in three foot six and then I will place this above the countertop.

I'm gonna put one here, maybe one right here and maybe one over here. And I'm gonna rotate this, and then I think one of these might be a fridge. So I'm gonna drop this back down to one foot six. There we go. Okay. So now that receptacles are placed, I wanna double check them in the room. So I'm gonna select them all, and then I will select selection box. Selection box gives me a three d view of the space, and then once I zoom in, I can hold the shift key and click the center mouse center scroll wheel mouse. And then once I have those two, I can move my mouse around and it'll orbit around the room. So there we go.

So I verified that these are indeed above countertop, but this one over here was a mistake. It was not supposed to be a fridge. Maybe the fridge is gonna be next to it instead. So I'm gonna grab this one over here, I'm just gonna move it. To move these, you can simply click and drag them if you want.

However, sometimes maybe you want them to stay aligned to a certain wall. So instead, what I'll do is I'll go up here to modify and click on the move command. So the move command is right here. And then when I click the move command, I can select the family or the element that I wanna move and then hit enter, I can constrain it. So when I constrain it, it will only constrain itself either to the y axis or the x axis. I won't be able to move a diagonal. This way it won't come off the wall if I don't want it to. In this case, yep, I'm gonna keep it constrained and I'm just gonna move it over here so that it shows up outside of the casework. And then I can check here my three d view. Oh, not this one.

I'll check here my three d view and you can see. Now sometimes if you're looking in a three d view or even on the floor plan and it just shows up as a big blob, all you have to do is click on the view tab and you can select thin lines. And suddenly it's a lot easier to tell what you're looking at because the lines are no longer bolded. So I'm gonna leave that for now and then I'm just gonna check to make sure that all these receptacles are at the correct height, which they are. Okay.

Perfect. Now because there's a sink here, I'm going to need some GFI receptacles. In order to show GFI on the floor plan, simply go over here, click on the ones that you want to have GFI, in it in which case, I will select everything that's on countertop. Then scroll down in your properties window and then you can go ahead and click GFCI. And then when you hit apply, you'll see that the symbols shade in, and that's our symbols for GFI.

You can check that by going here to the legends, and then under the plan symbols, electrical plan symbols, you can see that the symbol for ground fault circuit interrupter is the double shaded receptacle, and these are the other attributes that you can select. To switch between any of these, it's as simple as clicking the checkbox, and then in our case right now we're we actually need to combine GFI with above countertop height. So if I go over here to power, I actually have to select these and also add in the countertop, above countertop right here, and there we go. So now it'll show the symbol with the with the line to indicate that it's above countertop. So if you care about the height in Revit, you might want to make sure that the elevation from level is set correctly.

But if for some reason you don't really care about it, let's say no one ever looks at the three d model, then honestly, you could put it in whatever elevation you want and then just make sure that those that are supposed to be above countertop are designated as such by note. Alright. So that's it for placing receptacles.
